Teryl L. Mayer, DVM
Since her earliest memories, Dr. Teryl Mayer has wanted to be a veterinarian. Her mother recalls Teryl as a little girl proudly telling the world that she wanted to be a “doggie doctor.” Life intervened in those dreams for awhile and, as she says, she took the “scenic route” to veterinary studies. She entered the University of Iowa in 1992 to pursue a pre-veterinary course of study. At Iowa, Dr. Mayer carried a grade point average in excess of 4.0, a performance that allowed her to be accepted into veterinary school prior to completion of her Bachelor’s Degree. Dr. Mayer entered the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, a highly-rated veterinary school, in 1996. She graduated in the top ten in her class and was awarded her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2000. Immediately following graduation, she joined a practice outside of Detroit, Michigan. She later accepted a position with a large veterinary hospital in a Chicago suburb that employed 15 doctors and featured state-of-the-art care as well as a 24-hour emergency room. She received intensive experience in virtually all aspects of veterinary medicine in that position. It was in Chicago that she met her husband, an attorney who is also an Iowa native and animal lover.
In 2006, Dr. Mayer and her husband decided to escape Chicago, move south and purchase a veterinary practice. The opportunity to acquire South Pointe Animal Hospital in Hephzibah, Georgia arose; they visited the area and jumped at the chance. Dr. Mayer now practices veterinary medicine at South Pointe and her husband manages the practice. The couple lives close by with their three dogs, two cats, an iguana, a tortoise and a collection of snakes. Yes, it can be said that they like animals. They are also both avid Harley-Davidson enthusiasts and Dr. Mayer does ride her own motorcycle. They are also active in local motorcycle organizations and motorcycle-related activities.
